Organic Paddy Cultivation in India

Rice is one of India's most widely grown crops, and organic paddy cultivation follows a rhythm shaped as much by water management as by the seasons. The process runs across the full Kharif season, from nursery sowing in the early monsoon to harvest in autumn, with water control as the thread running through nearly every stage.

Nursery and Transplanting

Paddy typically starts in a nursery bed, where seedlings are raised before being transplanted by hand into flooded fields once they're strong enough. Seeds are usually sown densely in a small, well-watered nursery plot and grown for roughly three to four weeks before the seedlings are strong enough to handle transplanting. Transplanting itself is done in rows at a spacing that gives each plant room to tiller, or send up additional stems, and is typically carried out by teams of workers moving through the flooded field by hand, a task that remains largely manual even on farms that mechanize other stages. Some farms have shifted toward direct seeding, sowing seed straight into the field instead of raising a separate nursery, which reduces transplanting labor but requires closer weed management in the early weeks since the crop lacks the head start a nursery-raised seedling has over weeds.

Water and Weed Management

  • Flooded fields: Standing water helps control weeds naturally and supports the paddy's growth cycle.
  • Manual weeding: Where weeds do get through, they're removed by hand instead of with herbicides.
  • Water scheduling: Fields are drained and re-flooded at specific growth stages to manage the crop properly.

Maintaining a consistent water level takes ongoing attention to bunds, the small earthen walls that hold water in each field section, since a breach can drain a field faster than it can be refilled. Fields are typically drained briefly around flowering and again before harvest, both to manage plant stress at those stages and to firm up the ground enough for harvesting equipment or workers to move through it.

Harvesting and Processing

Once mature, paddy is harvested, dried, and milled to remove the husk — the same basic process used for varieties like basmati rice, grown and processed with extra care for its distinct grain length and aroma. Harvested paddy is typically sun-dried in the field or on a drying floor to bring moisture down to a level safe for storage and milling, since rice stored too wet is prone to spoilage. Milling removes the outer husk and, depending on the intended product, some or all of the bran layer, with basmati varieties often aged for several months after milling to develop their characteristic aroma and cooking texture.

Soil Preparation and Fertility

Before transplanting begins, fields are plowed and puddled — worked into a soft, saturated state that reduces water seepage and makes it easier for seedlings to root. Organic paddy fields typically build fertility with compost, farmyard manure, and green manure crops like dhaincha, which are grown briefly and turned into the soil ahead of transplanting to add organic matter and nitrogen. This groundwork matters more in organic systems than in conventional ones, since there's no synthetic fertilizer application later in the season to make up for weak initial soil fertility. Some farms also use a shallow layer of azolla, a fast-growing aquatic fern, on the flooded field surface as an additional nitrogen source, since it fixes nitrogen from the air and breaks down into the soil as it's incorporated during weeding.

Organic Pest Management in Paddy

Paddy fields face pests like stem borers and leaf folders, along with fungal diseases favored by the crop's constantly wet conditions. Without synthetic pesticides, organic paddy farms rely on a mix of approaches: maintaining field hygiene by removing infected plant debris, encouraging natural predators like spiders and certain wasps that prey on paddy pests, using light traps to monitor and reduce moth populations, and applying neem-based preparations where pest pressure is high. Timing transplanting and water management well also reduces the window in which many paddy pests and diseases can take hold.

Regional Paddy-Growing Practices

Paddy cultivation looks different across India depending on water availability and local variety preferences. States like Punjab and Haryana, with strong canal and groundwater irrigation, grow paddy on a scale and schedule that depends less on direct rainfall, including basmati varieties suited to the region's soil and climate. Eastern states like West Bengal and Odisha, with higher and more reliable rainfall, often grow multiple rice crops in a year on the same land. Hill and rain-fed areas may use direct seeding or shorter-duration varieties better suited to less controlled water conditions than the classic transplanted, flooded-field method.
