Turmeric is one of India's oldest cultivated crops, grown across states from Tamil Nadu and Kerala in the south to Meghalaya in the northeast, and the journey from field to jar involves several distinct stages, each of which shapes the color, aroma, and texture of the final powder.
Soil and Climate Requirements
Turmeric performs best in well-drained sandy loam or red loamy soil with a pH between roughly 5.5 and 7.5, paired with a warm, humid climate and either heavy monsoon rainfall or reliable irrigation to make up for a drier season. Waterlogged fields are one of the most common causes of rhizome rot, so many farms shape the soil into raised beds or ridges before planting to keep excess water draining away rather than pooling around the rhizomes.
