Composting 101: How Organic Farms Build Healthy Soil
Healthy soil doesn't happen by accident on an organic farm — it's built deliberately, season after season, largely through composting. Long before packaged fertilizer was common, farming households across India relied on exactly this cycle: waste from the field and the cattle shed going back into the same soil that produced them.
What Goes Into Farm Compost
Farm compost is typically made from crop residue, cow dung, and other plant waste — materials the farm already produces, turned into a resource instead of discarded. A good pile balances nitrogen-rich "green" material, such as fresh crop trimmings, vegetable waste, and weeds pulled during routine field work, with carbon-rich "brown" material like dried leaves, straw, and chopped stalks left over after harvest. On many Indian farms, paddy straw, sugarcane trash, and mustard stalks are common brown inputs, since they would otherwise be burned or left to rot in the field. Diseased plants, plastic, and glass are kept out of the pile, since they either fail to break down or can carry problems back into the soil.

Compost vs Synthetic Fertilizer
Compost releases nutrients gradually and improves soil structure over time, while synthetic fertilizer delivers an immediate, concentrated dose of specific nutrients without the same long-term soil-building effect. Synthetic fertilizer is usually formulated around one or two specific nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus, or potassium, so it addresses an immediate shortfall but does little for the soil's underlying structure or its population of microbes. Repeated use of synthetic fertilizer alone, without organic matter added back in, can leave soil more compacted and less able to hold water over successive seasons, which is one reason many farms use compost and fertilizer together rather than treating them as interchangeable.
Composting Methods Used on Indian Farms
Farms across India use a handful of composting methods depending on scale, labor, and climate. Pit composting, where waste is layered into a dug trench and covered with a layer of soil, is common because it protects the pile from monsoon rain and direct sun. The NADEP method, developed by Maharashtra farmer Narayan Deotao Pandharipande, uses a brick or mud structure built to fixed dimensions to control airflow and can produce a large volume of well-decomposed compost in three to four months. Vermicomposting, which uses earthworms to break down organic matter, produces a finer, faster-cycling compost and is popular on smaller holdings where space is limited. Many farms use more than one method depending on the season and the material on hand.
How to Tell Compost Is Ready
Finished compost looks and feels noticeably different from the raw material that went into the pile. It turns dark brown to black, crumbles easily in the hand, and has an earthy smell rather than a sour or sharp odor. The original inputs — straw, dung, vegetable scraps — should no longer be individually recognizable. Pile temperature is another useful signal: an active pile runs warm to the touch for the first several weeks and gradually cools back toward the surrounding air temperature once decomposition is largely complete. Depending on the method and season, this takes anywhere from about two months for vermicompost to four to six months for a slower pit-composted pile.
Common Composting Mistakes
A few recurring mistakes slow the process down or spoil a batch. Too much dry brown material without enough moisture leaves a pile inactive, while too much green material or standing water can turn it anaerobic, producing a strong, unpleasant smell instead of an earthy one. Skipping regular turning limits oxygen flow and can leave sections of the pile only partially broken down. Adding meat, dairy, or oily kitchen waste attracts pests and can introduce material that a farm-scale pile doesn't get hot enough to fully break down, so most farms stick to plant matter and dung. Leaving a pile uncovered during heavy monsoon rain can also wash nutrients out before they're ever worked into the soil.
