Indian agriculture runs on three distinct cropping seasons, each tied to the monsoon and temperature cycle. Knowing them explains why certain products are more available at certain times of year, and why the same field can look completely different in July than it does in January.
Kharif Season (Monsoon Crops)
Sown with the onset of the monsoon and harvested in autumn, Kharif crops include rice and many pulses, which rely on the season's heavy rainfall. Sowing generally begins in June or early July as the monsoon reaches North India, with harvesting running from September into October depending on the crop. Because Rabi crops rely on stored soil moisture and, in many areas, irrigation rather than direct rainfall, this season tends to be more predictable year to year than Kharif, which lives or dies by how the monsoon behaves. Gram and lentils are also common Rabi pulses grown alongside wheat and mustard. Barley and peas round out the typical Rabi mix in parts of North India, and because winter pest pressure is generally lower than during the humid Kharif months, Rabi crops often need less intervention through the growing season.
Zaid Season (Summer Crops)
A shorter summer season between Rabi and Kharif, Zaid is used for quick-growing crops and fodder, typically requiring irrigation since it falls outside the monsoon window. Running roughly from March to June, it's a narrower window than the other two seasons and is generally reserved for crops that mature quickly, such as watermelon, cucumber, and fodder crops for livestock. Because summer temperatures are high and rainfall is minimal, Zaid cultivation depends heavily on canal or groundwater irrigation, which limits how much land farmers dedicate to it compared to Kharif and Rabi. Zaid also serves as a useful gap season for farmers to grow a fast fodder crop for their livestock or squeeze in a short-cycle vegetable crop before preparing the land for the next Kharif sowing.
How the Calendar Varies by Region
The three-season pattern holds across most of North India, but exact sowing and harvest windows shift with local climate and monsoon timing. The monsoon typically reaches Punjab and Haryana later than it reaches states further east or south, so Kharif sowing in the northwest often starts a couple of weeks behind states like Uttar Pradesh or Bihar. Hill regions and areas with assured irrigation, such as canal-fed tracts of Punjab, can also run a more flexible calendar than rain-fed districts, where the entire planting schedule waits on the monsoon's actual arrival rather than the average date.
